October 21, 2021 – As the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) approaches an exciting new era of hybrid technology, Hyundai Motorsport reflects with pride on the past five years of competition, since the introduction of WRC’s third generation of technical regulations.
 
Across a total of 57 rallies (up to and including Rally de España), the Hyundai Motorsport team has claimed 17 victories, 63 podium results and 402 stage wins with its Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC car. The team has also been crowned manufacturers’ champions on two consecutive occasions, the highlights of a competitive period in its comparatively short WRC history.
 
From its inaugural season in 2014, Hyundai Motorsport quickly gained a reputation as podium contenders, but it was with the introduction of the 2017 regulations – the most comprehensive technical changes for thirty years – that the team became front-runners on a regular basis.
 
Back-to-back wins in Corsica and Argentina that year, the team’s first-ever consecutive victories in WRC, were a taste of what was to come for the Alzenau squad in the coming years, as a new-look, high octane championship thrilled rally fans, and captured fresh audiences.
 
Regulation changes centred primarily on improving aerodynamic and mechanical grip, with greater engine power and reduced weight, all with the intention of enhancing and broadening the sport’s appeal. The result was a highly competitive championship with tense battles, exhilarating moments, and nail-biting finales whatever the terrain. Four out of the top-seven closest-ever WRC finishes have come in the past five years (2017 Rally Argentina, 2018 Rally Italia Sardegna, 2019 Rallye Monte-Carlo and 2021 Croatia Rally) with Hyundai Motorsport crews often in the thick of the action.
 
Despite finishing as championship runners-up in 2017 and 2018, the team’s determination and never-give-up attitude paid dividends in 2019, when it secured its debut title after adding a further four wins to its tally during the year. The following season, curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, saw the team take successive titles and cement its position in WRC’s history books.
 
Now, another chapter opens with sweeping changes to the technical regulations for 2022 aimed at making the WRC more relevant and accessible for manufacturers, and with hybrid drivetrains for the first time. For Hyundai Motorsport, the commitment to the all-new Rally1 underscores the company’s continued ambition in WRC, and its intention to add more podiums, wins and titles well into the sport’s new era.
 
Team Principal Andrea Adamo said: “We are reaching the conclusion of a very special period of WRC for Hyundai Motorsport, one in which we are incredibly proud to have played a major part. We can look back at the introduction of those 2017 regulations and recognise the important role they had in defining this epoch of WRC. For our team, everyone at Hyundai Motorsport in Alzenau, our partners, our crews and our fans, these five years have allowed us to compete at the very highest level, to take our performances up a gear, and twice to prove our title-winning credentials. We have experienced every emotion possible: magic moments, close battles, celebrations, commiserations, tense Power Stages, challenges, heartbreak, and euphoria – these are memories that will live with us forever. We have poured a huge amount of energy and effort into developing our Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC to compete – and triumph – on the world’s toughest stages. We come to each rally to win; we might not achieve that all the time, but we can honestly say, hand on heart, that we have given it our best shot. That fighting spirit will stay with us as we embrace the new Rally1 era – a new chapter for WRC and for Hyundai Motorsport.”   
 
Thierry Neuville said: “I am pretty sure we have lived through one of the best eras in WRC over the past five years because these cars have been super exciting to drive and watch. The competition has been so close with all teams on a similar level of competition. We have taken two manufacturers’ titles in 2019 and 2020, we had a strong car and could fight for victory on all terrains. Since its first rallies in 2017, the car has evolved a lot; it is much faster than it was at the beginning, and the team has worked hard to get it as strong as it is now. I have enjoyed these past five seasons, especially the winning moments. At the same time, I always like something new, and a fresh challenge is coming.”
 
Ott Tänak said: “I’m lucky to have been able to drive so many different cars during this generation of WRC. They will go down in history as one of the best, I think. Driving these cars, with their aero, the general stability and the emotion that it gives you, it’s been pure fun and we will miss them. To get the title, you need the full technical package because we meet so many different elements during the season: snow, tarmac, mud, and gravel. It’s not easy to develop a car that can work in all of these conditions, but these have not been designed for one surface alone, it’s been possible to drive them everywhere.”

Dani Sordo said: “I have been very lucky to drive all of the different types of world rally car, but this latest generation has been amazing; how the cars work and perform in the stages is incredible and I think we will miss this philosophy a bit. The aesthetics of this generation of car have made them wider, with advanced aerodynamics and a more aggressive look. From the outside, as a spectator, it is nice to watch these cars but also inside the cockpit, they have been enjoyable to drive; you can push really hard. Having said that, I am sure the new ones will be fast, because over the years the way the cars have evolved to become better and better with each season.”
 
Craig Breen said: “I will be forever grateful to have been part of this generation of WRC; it has been something very special and we’ve had some amazing moments. The regulations we have had since 2017 have probably provided us with the ultimate rally car, and it’s been getting better each year. The level is mind blowing. In terms of technology and pure performance, there is nothing on this planet like these cars. On the fast gravel events particularly, with the aero improvements, you can do things your mind can’t understand. Being part of the adventure with Hyundai Motorsport, getting two manufacturers’ championship titles, has been a real pleasure and will be among my most cherished memories. It’s really an honour to have been part of that.”

As the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team embarks upon the new hybrid era of the World Rally Championship, check out M-Sport’s ‘Quick Facts’ ahead of 2022 Rallye Monte Carlo:
The new season marks the beginning of the hybrid era and the launch of a new car with its striking electric-inspired livery, and the team at M-Sport are excited for the challenges ahead and the promise of a competitive season.
This year’s Rally1 cars house a 100kW hybrid unit coupled to a 1.6-litre turbocharge internal combustion engine that uses 100% renewable fuel for the first time in the sport’s history.
The traditional season opener will take place over four days, with the service park for this year based throughout the event in the Monaco harbour area.
The added challenge of using hybrid in competition for the first time is further enhanced with no mid-day service point on any of the event days.
2022 sees Irishmen Craig Breen and Paul Nagle head-up the M-Sport team alongside Adrien Fourmaux and Alexandre Coria and, Gus Greensmith and Jonas Andersson.
Nine-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb will also join M-Sport’s ranks with Isabelle Galmiche as his co-driver currently as a one off drive on the iconic season opener.
The team will enjoy a diverse range of experience as young, fresh talent is combined with the knowledge of the sport’s most decorated driver.
Throughout the 2022 season, the M-Sport and Ford will be celebrating 25 years of partnership and competing in the FIA World Rally Championship. This landmark anniversary has seen the team take three manufacturer’s titles for Ford and a combined total of seven FIA world titles when including Drivers’ and Co-Drivers’ titles. The pairing has also claimed 61 victories and a record breaking 268 consecutive points scoring events to date.

I was happy with my improvements last season, and I want to build on that going into 2022. I was within a second of my first stage win last year, and I feel that with the new package, this is definitely an achievable goal, and we also want to try to push for our first podium as well. Monte Carlo has always been a tricky opener for the championship, but I have done the rally a few times now, and with the new car feeling so good, I am really looking forward to the challenge. It will be essential to build the speed throughout the weekend, especially with this being Jonas and I’s second rally together. WRC hybrid: a new era begins! 
We have waited for a long time, now they are ready to pounce on the roads of Rally Monte-Carlo. The 2022 edition, from January 20 to 23, will be historic in more than one way: a new generation of rally cars, the brand new hybrid WRC1s, using exclusively synthetic or ecological fuels, will allow the World Rally Championship (WRC) to show a good example of what is possible today, thanks to the investments of major manufacturers … and the talent of engineers. The presentation ceremony of the three Official WRC Tams took place on this Saturday evening. The Toyota GR Yaris Rally1, Hyundai i20 N Rally 1 and the Ford Puma Hybrid Rally 1 were unveiled.
Three years of commitment by Toyota, Hyundai and M-Sport Ford
The three manufacturers and teams officially entered in WRC have signed a three-year commitment to develop and enter hybrid cars, which is a great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the World Rally Championship in 1973 at the he glorious time of Alpine-Renault and Lancia, among other legendary manufacturers.
Testing of the new cars continued in December, in northern Europe and southern France, and drivers were very favorably impressed with the new machines, for which the development costs of all the new technologies put in place were shared equally between the manufacturers and the FIA, with three obvious priorities: safety, cost management and sustainability.
Announced in 2019, the introduction of hybrid technology, at the highest level of world rallying, has resulted in the final green light given by the World Council of the FIA, the supreme authority in motorsport. And it is therefore in the most prestigious rally on the calendar, the “Monte-Carlo”, that this new era will begin.
“A milestone in the sport’s history” for the 50th anniversary season
The introduction of sustainable hybrid technology for the WRC’s headline category marks one of the biggest milestones in the sport’s history. It’s fitting such a major progression will be welcomed in the championship’s 50th anniversary season. Along with the FIA, the manufacturers and Promoter, WRC is fully committed to the introduction of greener cars. The hybrid powertrain forms an integral part of the automotive industry as the world moves towards a more sustainable future, and it’s essential the WRC is aligned with this evolution. This is rallying with a purpose – providing a perfect R&D platform for the automotive industry to communicate its new technology. WRC remains motorsport’s toughest championship for productionbased cars and the leadership from these teams sends a positive message about its future to other manufacturers considering joining the series.
The hybrid announcement followed confirmation of the WRC’s plans for more sustainable fuel for competing cars and greener energy sources in the service park. Sustainable fuel (synthetic or biofuel) will be provided to competitors across the different championship classes, and plug-in hybrid charging stations will be available in service parks, with sustainable energy covering the needs for World Rally Cars and general service park power requirements.
A 3.9 kWh battery for 100 kW of power (180 Nm)
Each new car in the WRC1 category is equipped with a hybrid unit and a 3.9 kWh battery able to produce 100 kW (136 hp) of supplementary power, for a torque of 180 Nm. It is installed at the rear of the car, next to the rear axle, and protected by an ultra-resistant carbon envelope. It can be used to provide additional power during a special stage or to drive quietly, while respecting the speed limits, on normal roads between the stages.
Spectators will have to wait for the green light to help the drivers !
In the event of a car crash, and if spectators want to help the crew to put the car back on the road, they will have to wait for a green light to appear at the top of the windshield. If this light is red, or off, they should not approach, because it will mean that the car is dangerous and that they risk being electrocuted by handling it. This instruction will be reminded to all spectators throughout the rally!

Toyota GR YARIS Rally1 ready for the WRC hybrid revolution 
The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team will begin a bold new era in the FIA World Rally Championship when the 2022 season begins and the GR YARIS Rally1 makes its debut on the legendary Rallye Monte-Carlo from January 20-23.
The GR YARIS Rally1 is the successor to the all-conquering Yaris WRC, which claimed a clean sweep of the manufacturers’, drivers’ and co-drivers’ in the 2021 season that concluded just eight weeks ago at Monza in Italy. Now, the roads of the French Alps will play host to the first event for the revolutionary Rally1 cars, which take over from the World Rally Cars that have formed the highest category of the WRC for the past quarter of a century.
Rally1 cars feature several significant changes compared to their predecessors, headlined by the arrival of hybrid technology to the highest level of rallying for the first time. The hybrid unit in each car comprises of a 3.9kWh battery and a motor-generator unit (MGU) delivering an additional 100 kW (134 PS) under acceleration.
In the GR YARIS Rally1, this is combined with the proven 1.6-litre turbocharged engine from the Yaris WRC to provide the drivers with over 500 PS. The engine will run on a 100 per cent sustainable fuel: The first of its kind to be used in an FIA world championship.
The GR YARIS Rally1 is built around a dedicated spaceframe chassis offering increased safety protection for drivers and co-drivers. Other transformations required by the regulations include less complex aerodynamics, a return to a mechanical gearshift and the removal of the active centre differential. These changes will increase the focus on the skills of the drivers, who will also need to adapt to the demands around regenerating and deploying the hybrid energy on the stages, while working with their engineers to optimise the performance and drivability within these new parameters.
Since it ran for the first time last spring, the GR YARIS Rally1 has undergone a thorough testing programme which for the last few weeks has been focused on the particular demands of Rallye Monte-Carlo. The event is famed for its changeable conditions, which can vary from dry asphalt to snow and ice, and could provide an especially challenging start for the drivers in their new cars.
When the rally begins on Thursday night, the GR YARIS Rally1 of reigning champion Sébastien Ogier will be the first of the new generation of cars to start a competitive stage. The eight-time world champion, who has also won Rallye Monte-Carlo a record eight times, is embarking on a partial schedule of events this season along with a new co-driver, Benjamin Veillas. Leading TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s effort over the full season will be Elfyn Evans and his co-driver Scott Martin, who finished second in the 2021 standings, and Kalle Rovanperä and his co-driver Jonne Halttunen, who came fourth overall last season.
A total of four GR YARIS Rally1 cars will be present on every round with Takamoto Katsuta and co-driver Aaron Johnston contesting the full season for a newly-created team, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team Next Generation.
The crews today begin three days of reconnaissance of the stages, 85 per cent of which are new compared to 2021. For the 90th edition of the rally, the service park moves to Monaco itself from Gap. After a shakedown on Thursday morning, the rally will begin in the evening from the iconic Casino Square ahead of an opening pair of night stages – the second includes a return to the classic Col de Turini, to be passed in darkness for the first time since 2013.
Friday is the longest day of the rally and consists of three stages to be run twice with no mid-day service, only a tyre-fitting zone in Puget-Théniers. The task is similar on Saturday, which takes place further to the west: Three stages will be run in the morning, two of which will be repeated in the afternoon after a tyre-fitting zone in Digne-les-Bains. The rally’s final day on Sunday is made up of two stages run twice – the latter stage finishing in Entrevaux is the only one that is identical to last year.

There are a lot of changes for them to adapt to with how they drive and set up the cars. For a driver, Monte Carlo has always been the most difficult rally in the championship. A lot is going to depend on the conditions: We have more power, but how do you use that power in snowy and icy conditions? On top of everything, the move from Gap to Monaco means there are a lot of new stages. There are so many unknowns and that makes it really exciting.”

“I’m at the beginning of a different stage in my career, and as I’m not taking part in the full championship the feeling is a little bit different to usual for me at this time of the year. But being part of this programme with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing is still exciting and going to Rallye Monte-Carlo is always special for me. I’m still a competitor and I still want to win, so I will be giving my best to perform. I know the team has been working very hard to be ready with this new generation of car and big steps have been made in every test. I’ve had the chance to do three days of testing in the GR YARIS Rally1 in December and another day last week, all to prepare for this event. It’s quite a big change and it’s an exciting challenge to try and adapt to that. But I think going to Monte Carlo will be a huge challenge for everybody: There’s more uncertainty than ever going into this rally.”

“This is an exciting time in our sport and I’m looking forward to the challenge of these new cars. Since I first tested the GR YARIS Rally1 we’ve made some good progress, but it’s impossible to know where we stand relative to the competition until we get to Monte Carlo. So much has changed and it’s a clean sheet of paper. It’s not been easy to jump from a car that was so well-developed, where everything was coming quite easily, and into something that is a lot more unknown. The additional power from the hybrid system makes a huge difference and how you manage it could be worth quite a lot in certain cases. We’ve already learned a lot in testing and I’m sure we’re going to continue learning a lot during the year, starting in Monte Carlo. It’s a rally that’s always a bit of a lottery with the weather anyway, and now the base has moved south there’s a lot of new stages and different terrain to get to grips with.”

“My feeling with the new car is good and we have some good preparation behind us. With any new car there are always many things to work on and to improve, but I feel we have been making good progress all the time. It’s been especially interesting to get used to the boost from the hybrid. It gives you much more power, and that’s usually a good thing, but it can also be a bit tricky in certain points if you’re not ready to use it. As a driver you need to think about how to use it and if you can do that better than the others it could make quite a big difference. Rallye Monte-Carlo is going to be quite special this year. It’s always a tricky rally but this year we are going to have a lot of new stages as well as a totally new car. Friday and Saturday are going to be long days without mid-day service and if you can get through those days without issues that will already be quite good.”
