Record-breaking edition with record-breaking entry list

Rally Poland – second oldest rally in the world marks its 50th time in FIA ERC this year. In 2019 Polish event will be held as ERC counter for the 50th time in history. As many as 102 crews will celebrate this record, competing on fast gravel stages located around picturesque town of Mikolajki during PZM 76th Rally Poland (28-30 June 2019). This impressive entry list has been revealed on pre-event press conference, which took place today in Warsaw.

76th edition of Rally Poland counts towards four championship series: FIA European Rally Championship, Polish Rally Championship (RSMP), Lithuanian Rally Championship (LARC) and Motul Historic Polish Rally Championship (HRSMP).

This means a fierce battle between numerous competitors and an opportunity to compare their pace with international rivals. Meanwhile for spectators it is a chance to see varied show, thanks to much more convenient route and itinerary.

PZM 76TH RALLY POLAND – 28-30/06/2019
Where: Mikołajki, Poland

The rally in 100 words: One of the world’s oldest rallies returned to the ERC roster in 2018 after a five-year break as Rally Poland replaced Rally Rzeszow as the country’s round of the European championship for its 75th edition. First run in 1921, Rally Poland’s home since 2005 has been Mikołajki in the picturesque Masurian lake district, a three-hour drive north from the capital Warsaw, where high-speed all-gravel stages are commonplace. And it was in Mikołajki where Kajetan Kajetanowicz first emerged as a major force in the ERC, taking the event win in 2013 prior to beginning his record-breaking title treble sequence in 2015.

Event eligibility:
FIA European Rally Championship 2019, round 4 of 8
FIA ERC1 Junior Championship 2019, round 4 of 6
FIA ERC3 Junior Championship 2019, round 4 of 6
Abarth Rally Cup, round 3 of 6

Also counting for…
FIA ERC2, FIA ERC3, FIA European Rally Championship for Teams, ERC Nations’ Cup, ERC Ladies’ Trophy

What’s new for 2019?
Running in late June rather than later in September as was the case in 2018, 30 per cent of the special stages will be new for 2019 as organisers trial a more compact route.

Previous winners:
2018: Nikolay Gryazin/Yaroslav Fedorov (ŠKODA Fabia R5)
2017: Thierry Neuville/Nicolas Gilsoul (Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC)*
2016: Andreas Mikkelsen/Anders Jæger (Volkswagen Polo R WRC)*
2015: Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (Volkswagen Polo R WRC)*
2014: Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (Volkswagen Polo R WRC)*
*WRC event

Five facts
1: Run for the first time in 1921 from the capital Warsaw, Rally Poland turned 75 in 2018, making it the second oldest rally in the world behind Rallye Monte-Carlo.
2: A founding round of the world championship in 1973 when current FIA President Jean Todt co-drove Achim Warmbold to victory on what was then a Tarmac event, Rally Poland’s ERC links date back to 1960 when German pair Walter Schock-Moll and Rolf Moll triumphed in a Mercedes-Benz 220 SE.
3: Mikołajki in the picturesque Masurian lake district has been Rally Poland’s base since 2005, which marked the event’s switch from asphalt to gravel stages.
4: A three-hour drive north of Warsaw, Mikołajki is home to the gigantic Hotel Gołębiewski, which doubles as event HQ and has grounds large enough to accommodate the rally’s service park and superspecial stage, the Mikołajki Arena.
5: Pole Sobiesław Zasada, who became outright ERC champion in 1971 after taking two category titles in the 1960s, is the most successful driver in Rally Poland history with four wins.

It will include six spectacular tests in the Province of Frosinone with a liason of 481,13 km featuring two loops of the three stages: “Pico-Greci” (19,46 km) [SS1 at 9:33 | SS4 at 15:52] – this stage was present in the previous editions that for the first time will be faced in the opposite direction. Milan, July 18, 2019 – The European Rally Championship and Italian Rally Championship meet in Rome this weekend, with Pirelli supporting key drivers and categories within both series.

The challenge: Rally di Roma takes place on asphalt roads mostly to the east of the Italian capital following a ceremonial start and parade past many of its famous monuments. With challenging stages on slippery asphalt in warm summer temperatures, tyres must perform consistently on a wide variety of surfaces and be resistant to wear.

The Pirelli drivers: Pirelli currently leads the ERC standings with Polish driver Lukasz Habaj in a Skoda Fabia R5. Another driver to watch in a Pirelli-equipped Skoda will be 19-year-old Martins Sesks, who takes up the second of two prize drives in ERC1 for winning the Pirelli-supported ERC3 Junior class in 2018. Rome is a round of this year’s ERC3 Junior series and Abarth Rally Cup, both of which are supplied exclusively by Pirelli.

Many of the top Italian championship contenders are also registered for ERC honours, including Pirelli’s trio of title challengers: Luca Rossetti, Simone Campedelli and Andrea Crugnola. While Rossetti, a three-time European champion, drives a Citroen C3 and Crugnola pilots a Skoda Fabia, Campedelli has been chosen by M-Sport to give the brand new Ford Fiesta R5 its debut in the European and Italian championships.

The product: Pirelli will supply drivers with its P Zero RA asphalt tyres, which made a winning debut in the ERC on the last asphalt round, Rally Islas Canarias. They are available to four-wheel drive crews in the hard-compound RA5 and soft-compound RA7, together with the Cinturato RWA rain tyre. The hard RK5, soft RKW7 and wet RW are nominated for the ERC3 Junior Championship drivers to use.

The rules: Drivers of four-wheel drive cars can use up to 18 tyres during the event. ERC3 Junior drivers are allowed to use a maximum of 12 tyres, to be chosen from 12 of the RK5 hard compound, six of the RKW7 soft compound and six of the RW rain tyre.

The event: The rally begins with the qualifying stage on Friday morning, followed by six stages on Friday and 10 on Saturday, finishing in Ostia after a total of 189.4 competitive kilometres.

Pirelli quote: Terenzio Testoni, rally activity manager: “As our home event and an important round of both the European and Italian championships, which showcases our capital city, Rally di Roma is always a highlight of the season for Pirelli. It’s set to be a long and closely-fought rally in hot conditions, making it a tough test for the tyres as always. We can also expect different types of asphalt, adding to the challenge. We’re equipping the vast majority of the field across a wide variety of cars and classes, including the brand new Ford Fiesta R5, seen in action on the European Championship for the first time.”
