Audi GT driver Rik Breukers will drive the Audi RS 3 TCR car for Melbourne Performance Centre in the opening round of the 2019 TCR Australia Series at Sydney Motorsport Park this month.

The 20 year old Dutch driver has secured the one-off drive, giving the inaugural TCR Australia race a distinctly international feel.

Breukers currently drives for leading GT squad WRT, competing in an Audi R8 LMS in the Blancpain Endurance GT Championship.

He recently won the Dubai 24 Hours and is also a two-time class winner of the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.

Breukers has competed in numerous TCR events across the world, giving him a great head start compared to many of the ‘TCR rookies’ that he will face at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The deal for Breukers to compete at Sydney Motorsport Park has been brokered by Ryan McLeod, owner of MARC Cars Australia and a keen advocate of TCR racing.

Due to clashing commitments, Breukers will not be available to test with the majority of the other TCR cars at Winton on May 6. MPC will still take the Audi to the test day with another MARC Cars driver taking the driving duties, 19 year old Victorian Aaron Cameron.

Every TCR Australia race across the seven rounds will be broadcast live, free and in HD on SBS.

2019 TCR Australia Series Sporting Regulations released
Unique pit lane procedures to add spice to TCR Australia Series
Race distance, tyre allocation, points structure and BOP explained

As the first batch of TCR Series cars arrive on Australian soil, category organisers have revealed a host of innovations aimed at boosting fan engagement and broadcast flow in the sporting regulations ahead of the Sydney Motorsport Park season opener in two weeks time.

Based on international TCR competitions, the race weekend format and procedures ensure race fans and free-to-air television audiences will enjoy back-to-back TCR action and minimal down time.

TCR Australia teams will have 30 minutes at the conclusion of Race 2 to before Race 3 starts on Sunday. Once the 10 minute Parc Ferme conditions have been lifted after Race 2, teams will have just 20 minutes allocated for repair time before the pit lane closes for the commencement of Race 3. In this period, the cars will remain at a 45 degree angle on the pit apron allowing fans and viewers to be closer to the action than ever before when repairs and adjustments are made to the cars ahead of the final race.

Teams will not need to refuel between Races 2 and 3, with cars having the capacity to complete both races on a single tank.

The round format for the inaugural TCR Australia Series will see teams hit the track for two 30-minute practice sessions on Friday, one 30-minute qualifying session and one 30-minute race on Saturday. Sunday’s races are also 30-minutes in length, using a progressive grid structure throughout.

Teams will have access to 10 new dry Michelin hard-compound slick tyres for each round. Cars will be required to be fitted with a full new set for qualifying, with a further two new tyres required for Races 1 and 2.

The first two races of the weekend will receive 40 points for victory, while Race 3 will carry further emphasis with 50 points on offer for the winner and larger hauls down the field. The fastest qualifier will also receive two championship points for their efforts, on top of the $1000 cash prize on offer for the Astrontech Pole Award.

TCR Australia will run under the same technical regulations and Balance of Performance (BOP) recognised for all TCR competitions worldwide. As per regulations, BOP will be assessed constantly and changes can occur from round to round. A host of data will be compiled with TCR Series data globally to calculate any BOP movements, if deemed necessary.

TCR Australia’s Sporting Regulations have been developed in conjunction with the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS).

Round 1 of the 2019 TCR Australia Series is the headlining act at the opening event of the Shannons Nationals, to be held at Sydney Motorsport Park on March 17-19.

The most recent batch of cars have arrived in Melbourne and Sydney, including two Volkswagen Golfs that were recently raced in Malaysia, two Subaru WRX STIs and two Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloces into Melbourne, as well as a Honda Civic that has arrived in Sydney.

The pair of Opel Astras and Renault Mégane RS TCR are expected to land in Melbourne in the coming days ahead of the Winton test on Monday.

All races will be broadcast live, free and in high definition on SBS, with a live stream available worldwide on the TCR Australia website.

QUOTES
Liam Curkpatrick
Category Manager, TCR Australia

“Putting the 2019 TCR Australia Series Sporting Regulations together has been a joint effort between Series Management and CAMS. There was a lot of effort put into creating an exciting format for teams to compete under and for fans to watch,” said Liam Curkpatrick.

“One of the unique parts of the round formats is the short time in between Races 2 and 3. Cars must stay in pit lane in between these races with crew only being able to work on the cars for a short window before pit exit opens for Race 3.

“This brings the teams into the forefront and in public view getting the cars turned around in time. It adds another element to the show and is something very different to what we are used to. I’m confident that the fans will find this very exciting.

“From the outset it was important that we make the racing entertaining for the teams, the fans at the track and those watching the live SBS TV broadcast. We are pleased with what has been put together and look forward to getting the series started in Sydney in two weeks.”

Engines on at the 7th Rally di Roma Capitale

The event organized by Motorsport Italia is getting to its heart. The Qualifying Stage and the Shakedown will take place tomorrow as the opening from Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome.

Rome, July 18th, 2019. Engines are switching on at the 8th Rally di Roma Capitale. Preliminary operations being concluded today, tomorrow, Friday, July 19th will open with the Qualifying Stage in Fumone and the shakedown that will be run also by the contenders of the Italian Rally Championship on a 4.02 km road strip in Ciociaria. The Selection of Start Position and pre-rally Press Conference at the Sala della Protomoteca – Piazza del Campidoglio 1 Roma – entrance from the Vignola staircase – will be at 16.

The opening show of the Rally di Roma Capitale will follow at 19 with the start from Castel Sant’Angelo, the prestigious and exclusive setting in the Rome city centre that will house the start to the 5th Round of the European Rally Championship and Italian Rally Championship.

The big names of the European and Italian Championships will then head to Fiuggi for the night regrouping.

The first rally day will be Saturday, July 20th. It will include six spectacular tests in the Province of Frosinone with a liason of 481,13 km featuring two loops of the three stages: “Pico-Greci” (19,46 km) [SS1 at 9:33 | SS4 at 15:52] – this stage was present in the previous editions that for the first time will be faced in the opposite direction. It is quite a challenging test on a narrow road. “Roccasecca-Colle San Magno” (13,93 km) [SS2 at 10:28 | SS5 at 16:47] – this stage is a driven one and its fast sections climb up to 900 meters on the sea level. “Santopadre-Arpino” (21,17 km) [SS3 at 11:18 | SS6 at 17:37] – this is the longest stage of the rally, mostly run last year with an additional 4km section. This is quite a driven test with several corners one after the other. Sunday, July 21st will open with a more consistent program featuring two loops on four different tests in the Frosinone territory, while the double “Arena ACI Roma” tests will close the event in the evening.

The Poles Lukasz Habaj and Daniel Dymurski get to Italy as European Championship leaders on their Skoda Fabia R5. They come from the victory at the Azores and two podiums in Spain and Poland on June 30th. Behind them, the crew of the Citroen C3 R5 made by the Russians Alexey Lukyanuk and Alexey Arnautov that won the Rally Poland. The third place of the European classification is currently held by the young Britons Chris Ingram and Ross Whittock, also on Skoda Fabia. They lead the ERC 1 Junior classification too. The Italian Andrea Nucita has been shining so far in the European series on the Fiat Abarth 124, who is fighting for the ERC2 and the Abarth single-make title.

Milan, July 18, 2019 – The European Rally Championship and Italian Rally Championship meet in Rome this weekend, with Pirelli supporting key drivers and categories within both series.

The challenge: Rally di Roma takes place on asphalt roads mostly to the east of the Italian capital following a ceremonial start and parade past many of its famous monuments. With challenging stages on slippery asphalt in warm summer temperatures, tyres must perform consistently on a wide variety of surfaces and be resistant to wear.

The Pirelli drivers: Pirelli currently leads the ERC standings with Polish driver Lukasz Habaj in a Skoda Fabia R5. Another driver to watch in a Pirelli-equipped Skoda will be 19-year-old Martins Sesks, who takes up the second of two prize drives in ERC1 for winning the Pirelli-supported ERC3 Junior class in 2018. Rome is a round of this year’s ERC3 Junior series and Abarth Rally Cup, both of which are supplied exclusively by Pirelli.

Many of the top Italian championship contenders are also registered for ERC honours, including Pirelli’s trio of title challengers: Luca Rossetti, Simone Campedelli and Andrea Crugnola. While Rossetti, a three-time European champion, drives a Citroen C3 and Crugnola pilots a Skoda Fabia, Campedelli has been chosen by M-Sport to give the brand new Ford Fiesta R5 its debut in the European and Italian championships.

The product: Pirelli will supply drivers with its P Zero RA asphalt tyres, which made a winning debut in the ERC on the last asphalt round, Rally Islas Canarias. They are available to four-wheel drive crews in the hard-compound RA5 and soft-compound RA7, together with the Cinturato RWA rain tyre. The hard RK5, soft RKW7 and wet RW are nominated for the ERC3 Junior Championship drivers to use.

The rules: Drivers of four-wheel drive cars can use up to 18 tyres during the event. ERC3 Junior drivers are allowed to use a maximum of 12 tyres, to be chosen from 12 of the RK5 hard compound, six of the RKW7 soft compound and six of the RW rain tyre.

The event: The rally begins with the qualifying stage on Friday morning, followed by six stages on Friday and 10 on Saturday, finishing in Ostia after a total of 189.4 competitive kilometres.

Pirelli quote: Terenzio Testoni, rally activity manager: “As our home event and an important round of both the European and Italian championships, which showcases our capital city, Rally di Roma is always a highlight of the season for Pirelli. It’s set to be a long and closely-fought rally in hot conditions, making it a tough test for the tyres as always. We can also expect different types of asphalt, adding to the challenge. We’re equipping the vast majority of the field across a wide variety of cars and classes, including the brand new Ford Fiesta R5, seen in action on the European Championship for the first time.”
