ACI-backed Mattia Vita begins CIR Junior title bid in Sanremo

 

 

Mattia Vita will kick off his challenge for the 2019 Campionato Italiano Rally Junior title on Rallye Sanremo today, driving a brand new ACI Team Italia-backed Ford Fiesta R2T for the first time.

This year, all drivers in the CIR Junior series are equipped with spec packages; the same M-Sport built 2019 Fiesta R2T fitted with Pirelli rubber, giving aspiring young talents like Mattia a level playing field to show what they can do.

Along with new co-driver Massimiliano Bosi, Mattia will begin his first rally with Italian rally federation backing this afternoon, when Rally Sanremo kicks off with the Porto Sole street stage at 3pm. There’s nine more stages to go across both Friday and Saturday, culminating in the longest stage of the rally, Testico – Colle D’Oggia. With 34.45 kilometres of flat-out action to finish the rally, it gives Mattia the perfect opportunity to prepare for stages on the World Rally Championship.

The Junior WRC uses the same Fiesta R2T as CIR Junior. Given the sometimes gruelling nature of the world championship’s longer stages, classic events like Rallye Sanremo provide Mattia the perfect opportunity to hone his skills further. There will also be a rare opportunity for Mattia to experience night stages, with two of Rallye Sanremo’s tests taking place after midnight in the mountains which overlook the port town of Sanremo.

But this isn’t just about accruing miles for Mattia. This year’s CIR Junior champion will win entry to the 2020 Junior WRC championship, the same series which acted as a stepping stone for multiple World Rally Champions Sébastien Loeb and Sébastien Ogier.

Though the car may be new to him, Mattia has taken part in Rallye Sanremo twice before. His experience in the FIA European Rally Championship Under 27 category last year, in which he finished fourth in the championship, also stands him in good stead going into this weekend.

Hyundai Motorsport adjusts driver line-up for Rally de Portugal

Hyundai Motorsport has revealed a revised three-car line-up for Rally de Portugal, round seven of the 2019 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC)
Thierry Neuville/Nicolas Gilsoul and Dani Sordo/Carlos del Barrio will be joined by Sébastien Loeb/Daniel Elena for the gravel rally
The line-up reflects Hyundai Motorsport’s ambitions in an increasingly close and competitively fought manufacturers’ championship.

May 21, 2019 – Hyundai Motorsport has revealed a change to its crew line-up for the forthcoming Rally de Portugal, round seven of the 2019 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC).

Following a competitive performance at Rally Chile, Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena will take part in Portugal alongside the previously announced Thierry Neuville/Nicolas Gilsoul and Dani Sordo/Carlos del Barrio.

Loeb took third place in Chile, securing his first-ever podium in Hyundai Motorsport colours, and finishing as the highest placed Hyundai Motorsport crew. The result helped the team to retain its lead of the manufacturers’ championship after Neuville’s rally retirement.

Hyundai Motorsport holds a 29-point advantage in the title chase as the season approaches its halfway mark. The team has vowed to raise its game against tough opposition in another closely contested championship battle.

Andreas Mikkelsen and Anders Jæger-Amland will return to the i20 Coupe WRC for Rally Italia Sardegna next month.

Team Director Andrea Adamo said: “This decision was not taken lightly. We need to move forward as a team and make the most effective use of our versatile crew line-up. Sébastien and Daniel had a competitive event in Chile, and have found a good feeling in the car on gravel. We felt their contribution would allow us to increase our points-scoring potential in Portugal. We are trying hard to find a way to get Andreas’s confidence back and we are sure he will approach his next event, Sardinia, in the same way he was able to in Argentina. When you have a line-up like ours and look at the results from Chile, it’s necessary to react quickly.”

Sébastien Loeb said: “I had a great feeling with the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC in Chile, which was shown by our podium finish. I am pleased to have the chance to build some important momentum by taking part in Rally de Portugal. This is an unexpected decision but I am feeling in a positive frame of mind and determined to get another strong result for the team.”

Mechanical issues hold back Kelly Racing TCR performance

Sydney Motorsport Park, NSW (19 May, 2019) Unfortunately mechanical dramas hampered Kelly Racing’s final TCR Australia race for the weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park. The team was able to improve the cars from yesterday and fix the gearbox issues that held up André Heimgartner and Molly Taylor’s Subarus. All four cars were able to complete Race Two with good pace.

In the final race André was able to get into second position in the #777 Kangan Institute Subaru WRX, however a suspension failure during a close battle with Dylan O’Keefe put the car off the track at the second to last corner and out of the race.

Chelsea Angelo went off the track at the same spot in her #37 Dare Iced Coffee Holden Astra due to a steering failure and also didn’t complete the final race.

Alex Rullo’s #62 Castrol Racing Astra had a good chassis balance and was quick in the corners, however it really struggled with straight-line grunt. Molly Taylor’s Castrol Subaru WRX also improved over the day, but suffered a puncture during the final race.

It’s still early days with these TCR cars and team is looking forward to improving them in the coming weeks and hitting the track at Philip Island for round two.

“It was a bit unfortunate we managed to have some good tyre strategy and made some good places up in the races before and we were on for a good result in race three, we had a faster car than Dylan so I think we would have eventually got past but it wasn’t to be today.”

“We had a suspension failure at the second to last corner and that was that so disappointing to say the least after all of the gearbox drama we had to finally be able to get somewhere and then have this, it’s pretty annoying but we’ll regroup and see what we can improve for next round.”

“I felt like I made a lot of progress today in the two races, the pace was better than where we ended up so I just need to now work on my overtaking skills to make the most of that. We had that plan going into race two and unfortunately we got a puncture early on and a few issues with the front end that we need to look at once we get back to the workshop.”

“Overall though it was a great weekend, I really enjoyed it all. The team was fantastic to work with and so supportive of me. I just want to thank Nikki too who was my engineer, it was her first time solo engineering a car and she did a great job. Looking forward to the next race at Philip Island.”

Kelly Racing completes first TCR Australia race

Sydney Motorsport Park, NSW (18 May, 2019) Today Kelly Racing completed its first qualifying and race in the TCR Australia series at Sydney Motorsport Park. While car issues held back the team’s ultimate performance, we were able to finish the race with all four cars avoiding damage and making it safely through to tomorrow’s races.

“This first race has been an experience, it’s been good and there’s been a few challenges. We’ve had a few teething problems with all four of the cars to be honest. We’ve got a handle on the two Astras now, the two Subarus we’re still working through but keeping in mind we’ve only just received these cars a little over a week ago and it’s early days so I’m sure we’ll get on top of it all but this first round has certainly been keeping us busy.

“But I couldn’t really be happier with the fact that we’ve got all four cars to the finish line and four cars nice and straight at the end of the race and we’ve learnt a huge amount about each and every one of them. The drivers have all done a fantastic job in dealing with the challenges and doing what’s required and I think there’s potential there.”

“I don’t think this track is particularly one of the stronger tracks that the Astra will race on, but I don’t really want to jump to any conclusions until we at least get another race under our belts.”

“Today I’ve been engineering Chelsea’s car and that’s been a really good experience, she has done a fantastic job and I really like how she goes about everything, she did a spot-on job in the race and did everything we asked of her.”

“We made a lot of progress and made some big changes on the car each time and we’ve got the car pretty nice now for her and her feedback is really good so I think there’s definitely potential there for us to improve tomorrow.”

“The first TCR was was a bit of a struggle, we had some gearbox issues which really got bad towards the end so we were only able to do what we did but it was a good little taste of what’s to come and hopefully we can get all of the little issues fixed and be able to race tomorrow.”

“It’s a different way of driving with the TCR, obviously being front wheel drive you really have to look after the front tyres because they’ll just run out on you straight away because you’re braking, turning in and accelerating through them.”

“The tyres were really starting to run out by the end of the race, started pushing wide here and there so it is what it is.”

“It was definitely a baptism of fire and I was expecting that and I wasn’t planning on spinning on the first lap, I tried to go around Alex around the outside and in hindsight there wasn’t the grip with cold tyres. Lesson learned there.”

“From there I was in no-mans land by the time I got back on the track so unfortunately I just got to cut some laps and feel what the car does over the progression of the race but there wasn’t much I could do from there. It was a good experience and onwards and upwards from here.”

“For me it’s kilometres, you have to experience everything to know what to do so there are going to be a lot of different scenarios that I’m going to have to experience but hopefully we can learn from that and stay a bit more in the race next time.”
