New FABIA ?? R5 Up Close and Personal

An updated version of ŠKODA FABIA R5 rally car has been unveiled to the press and public at the Geneva International Motor Show. The replacement for the most successful car in ŠKODA Motorsport’s history is presented in the racing livery which it will bear on the WRC stages in the near future. Thanks to virtual reality, the motor show visitors are able to experience the intense emotions of the rally – almost as if they were there.

The ŠKODA Motorsport management team are making no secret of the fact that the goal of the new car is nothing less than to continue the exceptional success of recent years. “The next generation of ŠKODA FABIA R5, our multiple world champion, is an important step towards keeping both our customers from all around the world and the ŠKODA factory team competitive during the next part of the car’s life cycle”, Michal Hrabánek, head of ŠKODA Motorsport, told us.

Besides updated looks with headlights matching the street version of the model, the new rally car has also gained a number of important technical innovations. Among them, an updated 1.6-litre turbocharged engine now offers more power and a better torque curve. All the modifications are aimed at improving the performance and reliability of the car.

NEW GENERATION OF WRC 🌏 CARS IN 2022

NEW GENERATION OF WRC 🌏 CARS IN 2022

The Council approved the introduction of a new generation of WRC cars in 2022, with a five-year homologation cycle. Manufacturers will be allowed to use a production bodyshell or a prototype tubular structure to current WRC size guidelines, while the FIA is set to define carry-over elements from production vehicles for key visual elements. There will also be an option for ‘scaling’ of the body within prescribed limits, to allow larger cars to comply with dimension targets.

The cars will feature a supplementary hybrid system, to be comprised of common components and software for the first three years, with the potential for more technical freedom in 2024. The aim is to enable the cars to run on pure electric power in cities and provide an electric power boost on special stages.

A tyre tender covering all championship classes with 4WD cars will be issued for the period 2021-2024, helping to reduce costs by preventing an escalation in tyre development.

The Junior WRC programme will continue in its current format for the next two seasons. In addition to the existing prize structure of a Ford Fiesta R5 plus a support package to compete in WRC2, the 2020 winner would benefit from a potential path to WRC. Contingent upon then winning the WRC 2 Championship, the Junior WRC title-winner would have the opportunity to compete in two WRC outings in an M-Sport run car. To support this programme, M-Sport, in conjunction with Pirelli, has developed a national ‘feeder’ programme across Finland, the United Kingdom, Estonia and Italy that will allow them to step up into the world stage the following season.

The Council approved the long-term extension of the current Promoter, subject to a long-form agreement being signed.

Approval of the 2020 FIA World Rally Championship calendar was deferred to the end of June 2019. In the intervening period it will consider the potential rotation of competitions.

STARD claims first World RX podium in Hell

Austrian FIA World Rallycross Championship team STARD scored a first ever podium at Hell in Norway with Latvian driver Janis Baumanis.

Team and driver battled through the qualifying stages of the event at the traditional rallycross circuit. Following a DNF in Q1, Janis Baumanis used fast pace in Q2 and consistent form in Q3 and Q4 to qualify for the semi-finals, but before the final stages of the event began, the heavens opened. Starting from the third row of the grid in semi-final one, Baumanis immediately took his joker on the first lap in torrentially wet conditions and climbed into a final position for the fourth time in five races with an overtake on the last lap.

In the final, former Euro RX Super1600 Champion Baumanis again took the joker on lap one, and climbed positions when drivers ahead took their joker laps. But, on lap five, Baumanis was delayed behind Liam Doran, who was slowed by technical issues and lost out on moving into a podium position on the final lap. Regardless, the Latvian driver challenged to the finish line. However, after the final the event winner was excluded for a technical infringement, lifting Baumanis into a career-first World RX podium, in only the fifth race for the latest iteration of the in-house developed STARD Ford Fiesta Supercar.

In the other Fiesta, Finnish driver Jani Paasonen improved throughout the event in his second start with STARD’s new Fiesta and was classified 14th, scoring three FIA World Championship points.
