ERC YPRES RALLY DAY TWO REPORT: ELEVENTH HEAVEN FOR LOIX WITH CLOSELY-FOUGHT VICTORY.

Freddy Loix won the Kenotek by CID LINES Ypres Rally for a record-extending 11th time after a close battle with several other drivers on the classic FIA European Rally Championship event.

A fast start to the second leg in Belgium put MICHELIN-equipped ŠKODA Fabia R5 driver Loix into the lead on SS8 Kemmelberg 1 past day one pace-setter Bryan Bouffier, who remained well in victory contention over the next three stages before stopping on a road section with a gearbox problem on his Gemini Clinic Rally Team Citroën DS3 R5.

That didn’t ease the pressure on Loix though, because Stéphane Lefebvre was on a charge. Starting the day in fifth place, 31.7 seconds off the lead, the Citroën-driving World Rally Championship ace and 2014 ERC Junior champion won the first six stages of the day to climb to second and slash the gap to Loix to just 5.3s. However, just when it looked as if he might move into the lead, he stopped on SS14 (the second run over the event’s longest stage, Hollebeke) with a broken gearbox of his own. The only consolation for the Frenchman was the Colin McRae ERC Flat Out Trophy.

All this gave Loix a margin of 45.8s going into the final loop of three stages, stretching it to 56.8s en route to his 11th Ypres win in total and fourth in a row.

Kris Princen took second in his Peugeot Belgium Luxembourg 208 T16, up from fourth at the start of the day. He lost some time when he spun on SS12 Westouter-Boeschepe 1 but fought back with a stage win on SS14 to take climb to second as Lefebvre retired.

Bernd Casier completed an all-Belgian podium in a Ford Fiesta R5 with a long-awaited top-three finish on the event after four previous fourth places. A late burst of speed helped him to move ahead of Vincent Verschueren by just 0.3s on the penultimate stage, and he then won the final stage to make sure of the result.

Verschueren won two stages on leg one in his Fabia R5 but had a much tougher second day, not feeling well during the afternoon and making some mistakes. That included a spin on the final stage that dropped him to fifth behind Dutch driver Hermen Kobus, who took two stage wins on the final loop in his Fabia R5.

Eight-time Belgian champion Pieter Tsjoen (Fiesta R5) put a run of recent bad luck in Ypres behind him to have a trouble-free second day and climb to sixth. ERC regular Jaromír Tarabus (Fabia R5) battled throughout the second day with Claudie Tanghe (Fiesta R5) – running first on the road – and got past the local driver for seventh on the last stage. Up-and-coming Belgian Kevin Demaerschalk’s rally could hardly have started worse when he lost over three minutes when he had to change a tyre on the first stage, but he recovered to take ninth in his DS3 R5 in front of ERC stalwart Antonín Tlusťák (Fabia R5).

Didier Duquesne broke two wheels on his Fabia R5 with a spin on the same stage but made it to the finish in 11th. In 12th was 1994 ERC champion Patrick Snijers, who had a tough time in his new 208 T16 on an event he won four times in the past but rose from outside the top 30 over the final six stages. Jaroslav Orsák’s chances of a second top-five finish from as many starts in his brand new Fiesta R5 were hit firstly by a puncture on SS9 and then an off on SS14, while Dávid Botka was forced to stop with a mechanical issue on his DS3 R5.

After his first-stage crash, ERC title contender Alexey Lukyanuk (Fiesta R5) restarted on leg two with a chance of some leg points, but made it no further than SS9. Having run out of fuel in his Fabia R5 on SS2, Ghislain De Mevius returned to post three top-five stage times on the final loop.

As usual, prize money was distributed to the top seven ERC finishers, totalling €20,000. With the championship now reaching its halfway point after five rounds, a total of €100,000 has been given away so far.

Trouble-free VIP debut for new Hyundai R5 challenger
The new Hyundai i20 R5 completed a trouble-free public debut as a VIP car at the front of the field in Ypres in the capable hands of ERC graduates Kevin Abbring and Seb Marshall. Abbring was delighted with the reliability and performance of the car, which will now undergo further testing ahead of a planned homologation in September in readiness for deliveries to customers, with the ERC a clear target market.

ERC Junior Experience begins
The ERC Junior Experience got underway in Ypres. This is a learning programme based around three rallies, which gives prospective drivers experience of the ERC Junior Championship through a series of recces and specialised on-event courses, which in Ypres included pace notes and media training.

Griebel sees off Ingram to end his wait for ERC Junior victory
Marijan Griebel finally claimed his first ERC Junior victory, 12 months after a final-stage puncture robbed him of the honours in Ypres. The German was made to work hard for it by Opel Rallye Junior team-mate Chris Ingram, with the gap remaining under 10 seconds until SS13. Ingram eventually finished 30.5s back but a third second-place from as many rounds in 2016 extends his points lead in the Pirelli-supplied category. Julius Tannert completed a 1-2-3 for the ADAC Opel Rallye Junior team. In fourth place, Dominik Brož (Ford Fiesta R2) took a third finish out of three in ERC Junior, followed by Peugeot 208 R2 drivers Joonas Tokee, Kristóf Klausz and debutant Catie Munnings. The 18-year-old picked up ERC Ladies’ Trophy honours after Melissa Debackere crashed her R5 ŠKODA on the first stage of the day Łukasz Pieniążek dropped out of fourth on the penultimate stage with a problem on his Opel Adam R2, while Callum Devine’s impressive ERC Junior debut ended after his similar car slid into a ditch on SS9. Nikolay Gryazin (208 R2) restarted and was fastest on SS11, but went no further.

Scattolon scoops an unlikely ERC2 win
A heavily-delayed Giacomo Scattolon unexpectedly claimed ERC2 honours for the first time. A couple of major delays for the Italian meant Tibor Érdi Jr appeared to be cruising to a second straight Ypres ERC2 win. A consistent run had lifted him to 14th overall before he went off on SS14 and into retirement.

Home driver Geusens takes third in ERC3
Belgian driver Polle Geusens (Fiesta R2T) showed well against the ERC Junior drivers in the ERC3 rankings throughout, setting the best time in SS9 and finishing third in the class. Lászlo Német took fifth in his 208 R2. Acropolis class winner Murat Bostanci started the second day ahead of the Hungarian but had a troublesome day and finished up ninth behind the restarted Gergely Fogasy.

THE ITALIAN RALLY JUNIOR 🇮🇹 🌎 2022 CHAMPIONSHIP UNVEILED IN CAMPIDOGLIO  🇮🇹  🌎
The Italian Rally Junior 2022 Championship unveiled in Campidoglio
10 crews are ready to challenge each other in the series that launches the youngest protagonists and that will also take part in the 10th edition of the Rally di Roma Capitale. Motorsport Italia will be again on the side of ACI Sport, ACI Team Italia, Pirelli, Renault and Sparco.
The 10 crews that will take part in the Italian Rally Junior 2022 Championship have been announced today in Rome’s Piazza del Campidoglio. The series dedicated to the youngest rally protagonists devised by Automobile Club d’Italia and ACI Sport will have Motorsport Italia as technical partner and will collaborate with Pirelli, Renault and Sparco. The cars employed for this series are the brand new Renault Clio Rally5. Motorsport Italia has also introduced the 10th edition of the Rally di Roma Capitale.
This event took place in the presence of Assessor for Big Events of Roma Capitale Alessandro Onorato, Automobile Club d’Italia’s President Ing. Angelo Sticchi Damiani, CONI’s President Giovanni Malagò, the General Director of ACI’s Motorsport Marco Ferrari, the General Director of ACI Sport Marco Rogano, Automobile Club Roma’s President Giuseppina Fusco, the Vice President of Consiglio Regionale Lazio Daniele Leodori, Renault Italia’s Marketing Director Biagio Russo, Sparco’s Brand Manager Niccolò Bellazzini, Pirelli Rally Product Manager for Italy Walter Nicola and Motorsport Italia’s boss Max Rendina.
The Federation has completed an important selection of all the very young drivers born after 1994 to define the ten crews that have been presented today. These are Sara Carra-Giovanni Barbaro, Alessandro Casella-Rosario Siragusano, Guglielmo De Nuzzo-Fabio Grimaldi, Fabio Solitro-Rosario Navarra, Davide Nicelli-Tiziano Pieri, Davide Porta-Marco Demontis, Mattia Zanin-Fabio Pizzol, Davide Gianaroli-Alessio Spezzani, Matteo Ceriali-Luca Ferraris and Edoardo De Antoni-Martina Musiari.
The Italian Rally Junior Championship will include 6 rounds, four on the tarmac and two on the gravel. The opening round will be the Rallye Sanremo, whose technical stages have hosed the Rally World Championship for many years. The season will then continue with the two gravel rounds at the Rally dell’Adriatico, which will move to Urbino this year, and the historical Rally di San Marino. The second half of the season will include the Rally di Roma Capitale, which will allow crews to measure themselves with the colleagues of the FIA European Rally Championship, while the closing rounds will be the Rally 1000 Miglia and Rally Due Valli, the latter will have an increased scoring coefficient of 1.5.
A big novelty of season 2022 is the car: the Renault Clio Rally5 fitting Pirelli tyres. The Milan-based company developed for this series two compounds for tarmac, PZero RA and Cinturato RWB, and the Scorpion K for the gravel. These are tyres capable of providing performance and grip in all conditions.
The French challengers are pushed by a 1.3 litres engine capable of 180 hps and 300 Nm of torque and will certainly produce a great spectacle on the tarmac and on gravel. Special care has been devoted to safety, as the new cars will mount the new, latest generation Sparco “MASTER” racing seat developed by Sparco in compliance with the new homologation standards FIA 8855-2021 that have safety features very close to those of the Rally1 cars. The safety equipment of cars will also include the FIA 8853-2016 homologated Sparco Prime H-9 EVO seat belts with aluminium buckle to grant the highest lightness.
The collaboration with ACI Sport, Pirelli and Renault will allow the winner of season 2022 to take part in 6 rounds of the 2023 European Championship as the representative of the ACI Team Italia on an important international stage.
An important collaboration will also be with ACI Sport’s Federal School Michele Alboreto, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Always in the front line for the training and tutoring of young drivers in all the sectors of motorsport, the School directed by Raffaele Giammaria will organize several extra testing sessions to allow the protagonists of the series to improve their skills of preparing races. This activity will be led by the 12 times Italian Champion Paolo Andreucci.
In this important event staged in the Piazza del Campidoglio and in the enchanting Terrazza Caffarelli, Max Rendina and his staff also introduced the Rally di Roma Capitale 2022.
The event organized by Motorsport Italia will celebrate its 10th Anniversary this year and will do so with the double validity for the Italian Rally Championship and FIA European Rally Championship. It will also be part of the Italian Rally Junior Championship. The competition has been introduced by an exciting video teaser and will introduce several novelties both in terms of sporting content and support initiatives. This anniversary not only celebrates the first decade of the sporting event but also wishes to raise the centrality of Rome and Italy in a very important international motorsport event.

This evening at 9.00 pm the motorsporitalia.tv web channel debuts
A few more hours and motorsportitalia.tv will finally be a reality. At 21:00 today, Tuesday 22 March, the new web television channel dedicated to all the sporting activities of Motorsport Italia will go live with the first broadcast.
The first broadcast, which will be visible directly from www.motorsportitalia.tv, will be dedicated to the launch of the Absolute Italian Junior Rally Championship which on Wednesday 23 will inaugurate the commitment of Motorsport Italia. The structure headed by Max Rendina will in fact be the technical partner of the Italian Academy in rallies, again alongside ACI Sport, ACI Team Italia and the ACI Sport «Michele Alboreto» Federal School.
The Motorsport Italia TV project was born from the visionary drive of Max Rendina and his entire work group, who decided to further implement their communication activities in support of a development plan of particular interest, making use of the of the enthusiastic collaboration of the Mediasport Group staff.
The channel will technically be an OTT, therefore operational both on the web and on Hbbtv MS + (Plus), reachable by pressing the red button on the remote control on enabled televisions, within the digital terrestrial channel 402 MS Sport. In addition, all the scheduled contents, live and on demand, will also be visible through the Motorsport Italia TV app very soon available for all devices using IOS (Apple) or Android operating systems.
The schedule will be 24/7 or always operational, the editorial contents will be created in synergy with the editorial staff of MS Motor TV and with the journalistic coordination of Enzo Cerrone. They will report daily all the initiatives, sporting events and competitive programs of Motorsport Italia during the 2022 season and in the following ones. Tonight’s episode will then air at 10pm on MS Motor TV (CH 229 SKY – CH 55 TV SAT).
Not only recorded and in-depth content, but also direct such as the one that on Wednesday 23 at 18:30, contextual to the ACI Sport TV broadcast, will allow you to follow all the phases of the presentation of the Italian Junior Rally Absolute Championship from the Campidoglio, in Rome. , and the official preview of the Rally di Roma Capitale 2022, ready to blow out the first ten candles.
The program is very dense and also includes the Rally of Arezzo and Valtiberina valid for the Italian Rally Terrain Championship, organized for the first time by Max Rendina, the Rally of Lazio and of Cassino-Pico National Final ACI Sport Rally Cup 2022.
