Rally Great Britain

6 November 2015

Wolfsburg (06 November 2015). Three natural born winners striving for the perfect end to the season: Volkswagen is all set for one last big push at the 13th and final round of the 2015 FIA World Rally Championship (FIA). The old and new world champions* Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F), Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN), who have won three times this season and are currently second overall, and Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N), winners for first time on their last outing in Spain, have nothing to lose and are out to put the icing on the cake at the end of what has been a successful season for all three pairs. They could yet equal one of Volkswagen’s records in the forests and hills of Wales, which traditionally form the backdrop for the Rally Great Britain. 11 of the 12 rallies to date in 2015 have been won by the Polo R WRC. Should Volkswagen claim a 12th victory of the year, it will equal its own record of 12 wins from 13 rallies, which it set in 2014. With a total of 24 podium finishes, the 2015 season has already been more successful than last year. However, the task will be far from easy: the damp, muddy and slippery gravel roads that are typical of Wales make the Rally Great Britain a unique challenge on the WRC calendar. 19 special stages and a total 310.15 kilometres against the clock await the competitors in 2015.

“What we have achieved this year is incredible. Out of twelve possible wins, eleven have gone to Wolfsburg,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “So there’s no doubt that we want to be right at the top again in Wales. And in line with our principle: may the best man win. Without any team orders at all, we can already look back on a year in which all three drivers and co-drivers have won for us. All three of them will try to shine once again in Wales – preferably with a win – and carry this momentum into the next season. So purely from a Volkswagen perspective it will be a very interesting rally. And our rivals will also want to end the season on a positive note – and make our lives as difficult as possible.”

Fun in the mud: the classic with unique conditions

The rally in the north of Wales will not be a stroll in the park: “Gartheiniog”, “Aberhirnant” and “Alwen” – as Welsh as the names sound, the special stages through dense forest are real humdingers and require the utmost concentration. Not least because of the weather conditions, which are difficult to predict, making the traditional event on the island one of the biggest challenges on the calendar. The surface in Wales is just as unpredictable as the weather is unforeseeable. On more than one occasion in recent years, the surface has transformed from gravel to mud in a matter of minutes. Just 19 special stages and 310.15 kilometres against the clock await the drivers and co-drivers this season, and most of them should still be more than familiar: almost 90 per cent is the same as last year’s route. This will benefit anyone who has hung on to their pace notes from last year.

Still hungry: what Volkswagen can still achieve in Wales

The Polo R WRC has contested 698 special stages since its debut at the 2013 Rally Monte Carlo. It will reach the 700 mark on the second stage of the Rally Great Britain – “Sweet Lamb”. However, another milestone is within sight in Wales: so far, the Polo has 489 stage wins to its name. A strong performance could see Volkswagen rack up stage win number 500. However, the three Volkswagen riders will really have to put their foot down to pull off this remarkable achievement: they have just 19 special stages, in which to reach the next milestone at the Rally GB.

Volkswagen has its sights set on another achievement in Great Britain: win number 12 of the season. Volkswagen is currently the only manufacturer in the history of the World Rally Championship to have achieved a round dozen victories in one WRC season – in 2014. While Volkswagen’s three winners – Ogier, Latvala and Mikkelsen – could equal this figure, they have already surpassed one of the Volkswagen team’s own records: 24 podiums from this season’s 12 rallies to date is already more than last year, when they notched up 23 top-three finishes. In total, the Polo R WRC has claimed 65 podiums in 38 rallies, including 33 victories.

Two-man battle for the runner-up spot in the WRC: Latvala vs. Mikkelsen

The outstanding level of success enjoyed so far in the 2015 season means one thing is already certain: the Driver, Co-Driver and Manufacturer titles all go to last year’s world champions Sébastien Ogier, Julien Ingrassia and Volkswagen Motorsport. Another certainty is that, as in 2014, the top three positions in the Driver and Co-Driver competitions will be occupied by Volkswagen crews. The only question still open is who will finish second. In pole position in the race for the runner-up spot are Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila, who go into the final round with a 24-point lead over Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Fløene. A maximum 28 points are up for grabs in Wales. Mikkelsen/Fløene’s only hope of snatching second place in the championship is to win the final rally of the year. For Latvala/Anttila, another four points would see them end 2015 as the runners-up in the World Championship.

Quotes ahead of the Rally Great Britain

Sébastien Ogier, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #1
“It is a shame that our Rally Spain ended as it did. However, that is in the past and I am now looking forward to the Rally Great Britain, which Julien and I have won for the past two years. The special stages are exquisite to drive, although there is usually very little grip. When you drive in Wales, it does not really matter what the weather forecast looks like. You know before you even get there that the roads are going to be very slippery. I usually cope very well with that. Our situation is the same as it was in Spain, and in France before that. We have already won all three championships and can finish the season without any pressure. No matter whether it is the first or last rally of a season, I always want to win. The same goes for the Rally Great Britain. It goes without saying that everyone wants to win in Wales, before heading into the well-earned winter break.”

Jari-Matti Latvala, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #2
“The special stages at the Rally Great Britain mainly run through forests and are fast and flowing to drive. I like that because it reminds me of the rally in Finland. That is not the only reason the Rally Great Britain is like a second home rally for me. I associate a lot of great experiences with Wales: I made my WRC debut there in 2002, and won the rally in 2011 and 2012. I would obviously love to repeat that feat this year. Miikka and I had a few problems in the first few rallies of the year. However, we turned a corner together and are now looking to crown our successful second half of the season with a good result. A successful end to the season would allow us to take even more momentum into the ‘Monte’ next year. That is definitely our goal. I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone in the team. They have done an outstanding job all year. We will now push as hard as we can one final time, before we head off for a hard-earned break.”

Andreas Mikkelsen, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #9
“The maiden WRC victory for Ola and me at the Rally Spain was very special – especially as it means that monkey is now off our back and we can put our foot down at the Rally Great Britain without any pressure. I have a special connection with Wales: I moved there at the age of 17 to get my driving license. I also contested my first WRC rally in Wales. As such, it is always a nice feeling to return to these routes. Like the Rally Sweden, the Rally Great Britain is something of a home race for me. Many old acquaintances will be there, cheering me on. I am really looking forward to it. We will obviously be packing our umbrellas and raincoats – you always have to be ready for poor weather in Wales. That always makes the rally a bit tricky, as the special stages are extremely muddy and slippery. I have a taste for blood after winning in Spain and now want to win again as soon as possible.”

The number for the Rally Great Britain: 75

Andreas Mikkelsen took his place in the history books at the Rally Spain as the 75th winner in the World Rally Championship. As such, all three of the current Volkswagen duos have been victorious with the Polo R WRC – incidentally, they have all tasted more success with the Volkswagen than any other manufacturer. 543 WRC rallies have been held since 1973. For comparison: 713 Formula One Grands Prix have been held in the same period – with 62 different winners.

NOBRE’S OPEN-BOOT POLICY IN THE ERC

Paulo Nobre completed stage five of Rally di Roma Capitale with his car boot open.

The FIA European Rally Championship regular from Brazilian explained that he forgot to close it properly prior to the run.

“I took out the [safety] helmets and forgot to close the boot so I make one special stage with the boot open so it was the opposite to Poland [when it was the bonnet that was open].”

THE ALL-NEW FORD FIESTA R5

THE ALL-NEW FORD FIESTA R5

M-Sport and Ford are proud to introduce the all-new EcoBoost-powered Ford Fiesta R5. Replacing its hugely successful predecessor, the new Fiesta promotes the latest motorsport technology and road-going design.

Based on the Ford Fiesta ST-Line which is manufactured at Ford’s world-class facility in Cologne, M‑Sport has worked closely with the Ford Motor Company to ensure the new Fiesta R5 provides a big step forward in terms of pace and performance.

The original Fiesta R5 is M-Sport’s most successful global rally car and continues to win stages, rallies and championships worldwide. With more than 250 cars in competition, the outgoing Fiesta remains a capable and competitive winner, but its successor boasts improvements in all areas.

The 1.6 turbo charged engine delivers 290 BHP and 475 Nm of torque at 4,000 RPM. The direct injection power plant is also fitted with a 32mm restrictor in conjunction with R5 regulations and provides a significant improvement in response and drivability

Brand-new suspension components include front and rear McPherson struts with redesigned three‑way adjustable dampers from Reiger. The new aluminium damper bodies save considerable weight, and the geometry has been remodelled for optimised traction and stability.

A newly designed Sadev five-speed sequential gearbox mated to front and rear differential units is accompanied by hydraulic servo-assisted rack and pinion steering, and Brembo forged four-piston front and rear calipers provide the stopping power.

The initial design and development started in January 2018, with the first test session taking place in December that same year. Since then, eight test drivers have completed more than 30 days testing on a mix of different roads and conditions.

Smooth Tarmac, rough Tarmac, hot gravel, loose gravel, seasoned test drivers, rally winners, and even Formula One race winners – the latest Fiesta has been put through its paces and no stone has been left unturned in search of optimum speed, reliability and performance.

The project also upholds M-Sport’s support of young talent with 28-year-old Bernardo Fernandes – who engineered Sébastien Ogier to championship success in 2017 – leading the team.

Delving into his knowledge of the award-winning Ford Fiesta WRC, as well as the original Fiesta R5, Fernandes’ experience has been combined with the innovation of youth – his team creating one of M-Sport’s most long-awaiting and exciting creations.

Just like its predecessor, the all-new Fiesta R5 will get its first public outing at next month’s Ypres Rally – Éric Camilli taking to the wheel as the event’s VIP car. As one of the most experienced development drivers around, Camilli knows the car inside out and the event’s fast asphalt roads provide the perfect setting for the car’s debut performance.

More information on the all-new Fiesta R5 can be found in the Technical Specification, and those wishing to make an order are encouraged to contact M-Sport’s dedicated Sales Team at the following email address: R5Support@M‑Sport.co.uk

M-Sport Managing Director, Malcolm Wilson OBE, said:

“The Ford Fiesta R5 is our most successful global rally car. It’s a very special car for M-Sport and even though the original cars continue to win rallies and championships all over the world, we have taken our time to ensure this new model is even better with performance gains in every area.

“The test programme has been extensive, and we have worked hard to ensure this new car suits every level of driver. We have quite literally travelled the world – testing on a wide range of surfaces, in varying conditions and with a whole host of drivers taking to the wheel. This car is extremely important to us, and its adaptability is vital to its success.

“I’m extremely proud of this project. As a company we have always promoted young talent, and the design and development of the all-new Fiesta R5 was headed by one of our most ambitious young engineers – Bernardo Fernandes.

“We’ve always given opportunities to youngsters who show a real drive and passion for what they do. Bernardo is a prime example of this, and having driven the car myself I can tell you that he and his team have done a fantastic job. I’m looking forward to seeing the all-new Ford Fiesta R5 in action, and hope to secure even more success!”

Ford Performance Senior Manager, Gerard Quinn, said:

“This is another important milestone for Ford as the introduction of the all-new Ford Fiesta R5 heralds the introduction of the latest in motorsport technology packaged into Europe’s best-selling car in its category.

“Ford investment in the new Fiesta R2 revealed earlier this year and the latest Fiesta R5 ensures that we are supporting a sustainable future in rally for competitors and our partners M-Sport.

“This new Fiesta R5 also enables us to provide a high-quality replacement for its remarkably successful predecessor which was introduced six years ago. In the past two seasons the Fiesta R5 has won more than 40 championships globally, and we are looking forward to much more success with this latest model.”

M-Sport Rally Engineer, Bernardo Fernandes, said:

“This was my first time heading up a project. It was a challenge, but also a real privilege to be given the responsibility. The outgoing Ford Fiesta R5 was so successful, and is still very competitive in the right hands, but we have taken our time to revise and improve every area of the car.

“The R5 category has always been extremely competitive and the biggest challenge is in finding the best compromise between cost and performance. We had a lot of previous experience that helped, and devised a rigorous test programme with a range of different surfaces and drivers.

“The whole team have worked exceptionally hard and we pushed every element to the limit in search of peak performance and reliability. I also need to say a special thanks to Richard Christensen who headed up the design team – his input was integral to the project and we couldn’t have done it without him.

“Overall, I’m confident that we’ve taken a significant step forward and I’m looking forward to seeing what the all-new Ford Fiesta R5 can deliver in the hands of our customers.”

-ENDS-
