18 November 2014
From his office near the french capital in Paris, the known local co-driver Caro Escudero gave an interesting interview that explains his sporting career and his thoughts on current and future WRC.
Special Interview
¿Caro, as you get started in the specialty in France?
I come from rally driver family, then, it was evident for me, at 16 years old and bornt in january. Then as son as I could, I took my first licence to make my first race in march, under the snow!
I am keeping a special thinking. And for me at this time, it was obvious, I had become a profesional co driver.
I always worked hard to be somebody strong in my job. I was a girl, Young, then I didn’t have another choice, I had to work harder tan anyone!
What does the navigation for a pilot in a Rally Car?
A brief concept of the time with the 206 and Peugeot 307 WRC alongside Alex Bengue in national and international tournaments?
I codrive a lot of french famous rally driver, but for sure I did the main time of my carrer alongside of Alex Bengue.
In 2002 In more than my proper program, I was safety crew for Alex in French championship.
After the first event we make some tests together just in case his cpdriverof this momento got a problem. Only one week before the second event his codriver got some health problems. Naturally I had to replace him. Alexwas really anxious, but we have won our first French national events with WRC Car.
All ours partnersdesired to keep our crew like that.
It was the beginning of eight years of collaboration. I was not all the time easy because we were not profesional, but our personal investment should be total, then no time to find jobo r something other to exist… But it was from my side my most beautiful school.
Alex is somebody very attentive, very serious and conscientious, when he Works. He was my best teacher…
Since, I am really serious and I work a lot to leave nothing to chance.
With206 and 307, it was like a dream. We worked with one of the best french team. Peugeot Sport helped us. We learnt a lot, about car’s setup… In 2004 the season was bit more complicate.
But we finished the french championship neck and neck with Stephane Sarrazin.
Hopefully, because it was difficult to continue and find more Budget, Skoda Motorsport tryed some drivers for 2005 season. We were lucky enough to be chosen. The life in WRC offical team was something special, at this time the dream comes true.
I never felt from somebody in WRC that I was less strong than another men codriver. All people was completly open, and the same with me and my team mate.
Caro, the year I ran with Škoda Motorsport by Fabia WRC with program in 2005 was positive for your sporting career?
For sure it was the most positive thing in my career because you become profesional sportman (woman). You meet a lot of person of influence with who I am still in touch with a lot of them, for my present job. Also when you are in this kind of atmosphere and team you improve your level, to be more profesional again, you have a lot of ways to be.
Do we then several, now follow up the work, working with Citroën, Peugeot, PH-Sport and other companies worldwide by Motorsport?
Now I am working for different type of companies. For sure in the motorsport to realize test as codriver and team logistic, but also for all other companies in evenementiel, often for automaker.
In recent months I have returned to run the Citroën Trophy DS3 with small different young French riders, who can tell us about?
Since last year I wanted to put my helmet for many reason.
The first it was because, before next year I can’t, but my shap was ok now. After an big crash in 2008. I needed several years to recover all my fitness.
The second one, because, I was Little bit annoyed to see some not profesional codriver, with not big experience, asked at these Young drivers, who don’t have money, to pay them.
I decided to help some Young drivers in whom I believe. My favorite is Laurent Laskowski. I accepted to codrive him in 2015. This Young driver comes from the french federation and Citroen detection, who finds a lot of famous drivers, as Alex Bengué, Bryan Bouffier ou Sebastien Ogier…
The first one and not the less important, I need to give back all that gave me. I realice that there was a shortage of codriver and it’s important to try to learn them to work.
A lot of them imagine that the job is just to go up in the rally car and read notes.
¿Caro, Were Also Working with the Arab driver Yazeed Al-Rajhi has quite WRC2 participation in this season with His Ford Fiesta RRC, as has-been the experience?
Concerning Yazeed Al Rajhi, I have to confess you that I am totally fan of him. Alex Bengué was the first and still Works with him. From my side in an very nice experience I really love to work with all the Yazeed Racing Team. I know very well Yazeed and Michael Orr (What I known since a lot time before Yazeed adventure). I appreciate to work with them because the requests are differents.
A brief concept living today currently the WRC and thinking to come for the future of the category with a possible regulatory revolution in 2017?
For today, from my side I think that the main problema is that there are not enough WRC Car entered in WRC Events.
Until 2005, it was quite easy for Young driver to try them one ore more rallies, even without being wealthy. The manufacturers could show taht this or other driver was able to do with this kind of car. After that it was easiest to choose between diferents crews.
Today we have the WRC2 and WRC3 championship but it’s not like when you can prove your talent with a WRC car. We have to do this championship but absolutly find a solution one mínimum, or two events with WRC car in front of official program.
Also without Junior Team, the manufacturers don’t want take so much risks, to spend money, to try drivers in WRC Car.
We showed that the junior team is the solution to plump up the chain. It was te way of Ogier or Mikkelsen.
We absolutly must find solution to give more chances at some Young drivers with talent, even if they don’t have a lot of money. May be the FIA should ask to have an junior team to all of WRC Manufacturers entered in WRC Championship or at least one “junior’s” car.
Since some years and untill now we have decide that is was simplier to take somebody middling with a lot of money or patners, than an top pilot a Little less rich.
Concerning the regulation I don’t want to give you my opinión because a lot of things can happen again, then I am not sure that my point of view is so important.
Is the Rally France Alsace should continue or are moving back to the island of Corsica, as rumored for next year?
I don’t know, for now, I never heard that.
Is France is synonymous with world champions discipline, Didier Auriol, Sébastien Loeb, Sébastien Ogier, who comes back as a young talent to continue the winning ways of His country winning drivers, Sébastien Chardonnet, Stéphane Lefebvre, etc?
I don’t know, for me, it should not be these drivers. I think about some otherwho arrived now in France Championship. Some drivers who are less experience but with already lot of talent. I can’t give you one name but for sure some Young talents drivers will arrive.
In France we have one good thing to find them, with Citroen and all the “citroen school”.
You start with DS3 R1 then DS3 R3, both in france, to get the international step with WRC3 championship where you can win the WRC2 championship for the year after.
In 2 years you can be in WRC junior Championship and 1 more years in WRC2 championship
