16 June 2014

Team Peugeot-Hansen left the third round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Hell, Norway with 39 team championship points from the event, more than any other team. Both Timur Timerzyanov and Timmy Hansen made it to the final for the first time this season in challenging conditions, proving the pace of the new Peugeot 208WRX by claiming the second row of the grid.

The semi finals in Hell had been held in wet conditions and with more rain forcast for the final, the team elected to use wet tyres. Unfortunately, the weather changed quicker than expected and on a drying track, Timerzyanov’s tyres lost grip. The Russian star ran second until lap four of the race when he took his joker lap, dropping to fourth. Timmy Hansen made a fantastic start and headed straight for the joker lap where he was forced wide by Henning Solberg, breaking the cars power steering and slowing Hansen to the end of the race. He finished sixth.

Timur Timerzyanov: “We can reach the top step of the podium”

Reigning European Rallycross Champion Timur Timerzyanov jumped to fifth place in the World Rallycross Championship standings with his fourth place finish in Hell. The Russian driver won his heat four race, leading home team mate Timmy Hansen in a close battle. Timerzyanov is excited by the performance of the Red Bull backed Peugeot 208 WRX and expects a win is just around the corner.

“This weekend has gone much better for us, and it was really good to get into the final with both me and Timmy. We hoped that the final would be wet so we had rain tyres on, but the track was drying really quickly and the wet tyres got too hot and started to loose grip. We hoped to pass people when they were struggling for grip but it was quite dry. You have to try these things. We will continue to work really hard with the car, this weekend has shown that we can be really fast and we can reach the top step of the podium once we have done more work. We will win soon, I‘m sure of it.”

Timmy Hansen: “Overall, the weekend has been fantastic for the whole team”

The experienced team made some significant setup changes to Timmy Hansen’s 208 WRX on Saturday evening which transformed the car and allowed Hansen to set the fastest lap time of the weekend on Sunday morning in heat four. Despite a great launch, the young Swede suffered accident damage at the start of the final but managed to get his car to the end of the race to ensure the team took home a large haul of championship points.

“I took a big hit in the joker lap from Henning Solberg which broke my power steering. I used every single bit of strength I had to keep control of the car during the race. I kept going until the finish, I’m really tired now but you have to keep going, you never know when someone might have a problem and you can make up a place. Overall, the weekend has been fantastic for the whole team, to have both me and Timur in the final is just great. We found a big step forward with the car for Sunday, and I was able to set really fast lap times all day. The car has huge potential and we had no troubles at all today.”

Kenneth Hansen: “The hard work the team has done has really paid off”

Using the experience of winning 14 European Rallycross Championships as a driver, Kenneth Hansen guided the Team Peugeot-Hansen squad to their most successful event so far having in the new World Championship having worked hard since the last event at Lydden Hill.

“The general feeling in the team is that we have found a lot more speed, for sure we are on the pace now. The hard work the team has done since Lydden Hill has been amazing, and it has really paid off. Timur always goes well in Norway, and he drove very well all weekend. Timmy was fast too and just unlucky in the final, sometimes these things happen, that’s rallycross. The weekend has been a success, to score the most team points from the event is really encouraging for everybody and we are really looking forward to improving our pace further.”

AL-ATTIYAH ?? SEALS 14TH QATAR ?? RALLY WIN AND FIRST REGIONAL SUCCESS FOR VOLKSWAGEN’S POLO GTI R5 ??

LUSAIL (Qatar): Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah cruised through the final six gravel special stages of the Manateq Qatar International Rally to seal a convincing victory on Saturday.

A record-breaking 14th victory in his home event also marked a remarkable 70th MERC victory in the 211-event history of the FIA Middle East Rally Championships since 1984. His French co-driver Matthieu Baumel duly claimed his third win in Qatar and a career 18th in the MERC.

The success also marked the first outright FIA championship rally win for Volkswagen’s Polo GTI R5 that made its debut at the WRC in Spain last October and claimed WRC 2 success in Sweden in February with Norwegian driver Ole Christian Veiby. Customer Polos have already won national events in Belgium, Norway, Sweden and Latvia this year
