SUBARU ✨ MOTORSPORTS USA 🇺🇸 TAKES TWO PODIUM POSITIONS AT 100 ACRE WOOD 🇺🇸

Seventeen-year old rally phenom Oliver Solberg started the 2019 American Rally Association (ARA) season with a bang at this weekend’s Rally in the 100 Acre Wood, driving through adversity to a strong second-place finish in his first event with Subaru Motorsports USA. Teammates and defending ARA champions David Higgins and Craig Drew led for much of the rally and traded stage wins with Solberg and co-driver Aaron Johnston throughout the weekend, persevering through a late mechanical issue to secure third overall. The Subaru teammates combined for thirteen stage wins out of the event’s sixteen stages.

The fast, sweeping dirt roads of Missouri set the stage for Subaru Motorsports USA’s return to the legendary Subaru blue and gold competition livery – and for the first round of Higgins and Drew’s defense of their 2018 title. True to his usual form, Higgins went on attack early on Friday to win six of the opening day’s ten stages and build a 44-second lead over rival Barry McKenna. Solberg, starting his first-ever gravel rally in an all-wheel drive car, rebounded from a flat tire on Stage 7 to win the next two stages outright and finish the day comfortably in third, well within striking distance of McKenna.

Hopes for a Subaru one-two finish would be frustrated on Saturday, as adversity struck both WRX STI rally cars in the early stages of the day. Solberg’s hood came loose on a fast, bumpy section of Stage 12, smashing his windshield as the car crested a jump at over 110 miles per hour. Despite the sudden impact, Solberg and Johnston were able to continue with only minimal delay to refasten the hood. Two stages later, Higgins and Drew’s car stopped on stage with an electrical problem that cost the duo more than five minutes. Their #75 car would drop to third, ceding first to McKenna and moving Solberg up to second. The young Swede won both of the two final stages in a frantic push to make up the 50-second gap to McKenna, but would come up just short – by an agonizing 6.8 seconds.

“Coming into this event I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Oliver said. “When the time was there on the first gravel stage, everything changed. You keep telling yourself, stay calm and keep doing what you’re doing, but when you’re in the top three, you’re always thinking about the win. That was crazy! To be thinking to the win on my first event – but it shows how comfortable I felt with the car and the team straight away.”

For Higgins and Drew, Friday’s dominant performance provided some consolation for their third-place finish – unfamiliar territory for a pair accustomed to finishing atop the podium.

“We had tough luck on Saturday, but otherwise a very encouraging start to the season,” said Higgins. “We’ve been away from 100 Acre Wood for a few years and it’s great to have it back on the calendar – these are some of the fastest stages we see all year, and the fans come out in big numbers. For us, the focus is on defending our championship title, so we have to be patient and the wins will come.”

Higgins/Drew and Solberg/Johnston will go head-to-head again at Washington state’s Olympus Rally, to be held April 27-28.

Solberg & Johnston 2nd, Higgins & Drew 3rd at 100 Acre Wood

Subaru Motorsports USA completed its first rally of the 2019 American Rally Association Championship with both cars on the podium. The #70 Subaru WRX STI of Oliver Solberg and Aaron Johnston finished second behind Barry McKenna and Leon Jordan, while teammates David Higgins and Craig Drew finished third in their #75 Subaru WRX STI.

The day started with Higgins and Drew in the lead by 44 seconds with 61 competitive stage miles remaining. Solberg and Johnston were third, 1 minute and 17 seconds back after a flat tire delayed them Friday. On the first loop of stages Solberg put down remarkable stage times despite a brief bit of misfortune. Solberg recounted the incident at service Saturday: “Both stages were good and we found good rhythm. We are getting up to speed, but toward the end of the second stage, we had the hood come up and smash the window, then finished the last 2 miles without pace notes. Not the best but we will keep shooting for a good result.”

David Higgins and Craig Drew were running smoothly out front, but an electrical problem on stage 14 cost them almost five minutes. This dropped the #75 WRX STI from first back to third, at which point they shifted their focus to defending a podium finish. Teammates Solberg and Johnston moved into second place, while Barry McKenna and Leon Jordan became the new race leaders. The gap to the lead was 50 seconds with only 21 stage miles remaining. Solberg drove conservatively to preserve his second place standing, while still managing to narrow the gap to a mere 6.8 seconds. An impressive feat for the young Solberg, especially considering it was his first time racing on gravel in an all wheel drive car. “I’m really happy with it and I am surprised how fast I got up to speed. We were able to manage ourselves well throughout the rally. We had some bad luck, but I am happy and it is for sure emotional to be in a blue Subaru. I got to the last stage and couldn’t believe it.”

The next event in the 2019 American Rally Association Championship takes place on the west coast at the Olympus Rally in late April.
