GCK SUCCESSFULLY DEBUTS AT 2018 FIA WORLDRALLYCROSS SEASON OPENER IN BARCELONA.
GCK successfully debuts at 2018 FIA World Rallycross season opener in Barcelona
The much-anticipated newcomer team, GC-Kompetition wrapped up a successful debut race weekend
in front of 30,000 fans at Circuit de Catalunya with both Renault Mégane R.S. RX making it to the
semi-final after 2 days of extreme conditions from wet to dry.
Saturday’s torrential rain resulted in extremely difficult conditions on the track, creating a steep learning curve for both team and drivers as they were trying to adapt to the unknown with Jérôme and Guerlain able to safely finish in 9th and 10th place respectively at the end of day 1.
With feedback and changes made by Prodrive ahead of Q3, and the sun finally coming through on Sunday, the newly built Renault Mégane R.S. RX showed quickly improving pace throughout the day with Jérôme finishing Q4 in 10th overall and Guerlain in 11th, ready to battle in the semi-finals. Guerlain started in the first semi-final against Petter Solberg, Johan Kristoffersson, Andreas Bakkerud, Timur Timerzyanov and Robin Larsson and after very strong start and some contact soon after, he managed to finish in 5th ahead of Larsson.
Semi-final 2 saw Jérôme go up against Sébastien Loeb, Timmy Hansen, Mattias Ekstrom, Nicholas Gronholm and Janis Baumanis. After an incredible start allowing for a big chance to make the final, contact with Gronholm saw Grosset-Janin finish his semi-finals in 5th also.
Guerlain Chicherit commented: “Sunday was a really amazing day for GC-Kompetition. To have both cars in the semi-finals on our very first race weekend, first time in race conditions in a completely newly built car, was pretty good. We both had great starts, which shows real promise. It’s been a really positive weekend for us; now we finally know where we’re truly at and can start working on closing the gap and keep pushing, pushing, pushing the others. We’re super motivated to challenge the long-established drivers and make it to the podium soon.”
Jérôme Grosset-Janin added: “We had a great weekend and made the best of the poor weather conditions we had to work with on Saturday.
Our team does a great job despite the weather and I’m starting to feel right at home with them. We aren’t missing much to be in the finals. Congratulations to everyone and thank you for a great weekend.
