Matosinhos/Portugal, 18 May 2017 – In the world of rallying the R5 category offers a huge variety of cars and concepts. The road-car derived racers with turbocharged engines and added all-wheel drive are an affordable way of competing on top level especially for private or importer teams.
In the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC 2) plus a huge number of regional and national series, R5 cars from manufacturers like Škoda, Ford, Citroën, Peugeot and Hyundai are giving a clear proof of competitive diversity.
The new HOLZER R5 Corsa could be an additional car entering this challenging competition. While the process of FIA homologation can only be done by a manufacturer itself, the HOLZER R5 Corsa is developed according to the current R5 regulations. “We believe in R5 as a very competitive and interesting rally category. The technology is affordable, so we decided to start a project to built the HOLZER R5 Corsa”, says Guenther Holzer, CEO of HOLZER Group. “I have to emphasize that this is a fully private initiative. We have to thank the organisers of Rally Portugal for giving us the opportunity to present the car in the service park. Now we are looking forward to the feedback of the rally community”, Guenther Holzer added after the car’s presentation in Matosinhos.
Brothers Ronald and Guenther Holzer were successful competitors in German Rally Championship for decades. Having started their career together in Opel Rally Cup they eventually split responsibilities, Ronald continuing as driver and former co-driver Guenther running the team. Ronald won the title in 1989 with a Lancia Delta HF Integrale. When Ronald hung up the helmet as well, the brothers successfully built up HOLZER Group.
One of their most loyal and faithful partners was and is Adam Opel AG. For years HOLZER was representing Opel in touring car racing up to DTM. Today being a supplier among others to Formula One teams and the aviation industry, HOLZER always stuck to its roots in rallying. In 2017 again HOLZER is running the Opel Junior Team in FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) and the German ADAC Opel Rally Cup one-make series on behalf of the manufacturer.
