Successful debut for PSRX Volkswagen in Barcelona.

Petter Solberg (N) of the PSRX Volkswagen team narrowly missed out on a place on the podium, finishing fourth at the opening round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship (WRX) in Barcelona. Solberg and team-mate Johan Kristoffersson (S) had both progressed to the final with the Volkswagen Polo GTI Supercar. Kristoffersson started from first place on the grid, but got away badly and eventually had to settle for sixth.

However, the newly-formed team did have something to celebrate: they top the Team standings, level on points with the EKS team of winner Mattias Ekström (S/Audi). Volkswagen also had cause for celebration in the European Rallycross Championship, where Anton Marklund (S) was victorious at the wheel of a Polo. The next race weekend in the WRX takes place in Montalegre (P) on 20 and 21 April.

Result:
1 Mattias Ekström, 4m 32.260s
2 Timo Scheider, 4m 32.622s
3 Andreas Bakkerud, 4m 34.128s
4 Petter Solberg, 4m 34.885s
5 Timmy Hansem, 4m 35.511s
6 Johan Kristoffersson, 4m 36.236s

Petter Solberg
“I am so, so proud of what we have all achieved here. The last few months have been really crazy, like really crazy getting everything sorted out. But we are here and we are racing. We hoped to be on the pace and we hoped to show ourselves in a good light. It was a dream for us to have two cars in the final today and the dream came true. I’m so happy with the performance and couldn’t be happier with the team and for Johan, he showed such strong pace – he was the star driver for me.”

Johan Kristoffersson
“The team has put so much work in and everything is working so well from the first race. Naturally, I was a little disappointed with the final, I so wanted this result for the whole PSRX Volkswagen Sweden team – those guys worked so hard – but this is racing. The big thing is the pace we have from the car. It just makes me more determined do even better for the team at the second round.”
