Kubica off to solid start with BRC Racing Team in Monte Carlo.
22 January 2016
Robert Kubica is eighth overall in the BRC Racing Team Ford Fiesta RS WRC after the first two stages of the Monte Carlo Rally.
The opening pair of stages was run in darkness following a ceremonial start outside the famous Casino in Monaco, with the first car getting away at 18:15.
The Pole got off to a solid beginning, finishing eighth-fastest on both opening stages, which totalled just over 40 kilometres.
Conditions were relatively warm for the Monte Carlo Rally, with temperatures hovering just below freezing for both stages. The roads were generally damp, with just two or three isolated patches of ice at the top of the Col to catch out the unwary.
However, all the leading contenders got through the stages without major incidents, and Kubica promised caution in the early stages.
“Generally the feeling is OK, but I am not sure about grip,” said the Pole at the end of the opening stages. “There’s a long way still to go; I am losing a bit of time but I’m not sure where. No real problems; I’m just driving and trying to enjoy.”
Tomorrow there will six stages, with the bulk of the action coming on Saturday. Having secured his place in the provisional points-scoring places today, Kubica will be aiming to make his way up the leaderboard over the weekend. He lies less than 30 seconds behind the leaders, so there is everything still to play for, on an event where he has starred in the past.
The BRC-prepared Fiesta has shown exemplary reliability so far, but the biggest test is still to come. Friday’s first stage gets underway at 10:21.
