LARA VANNESTE: INTERVIEW SPECIAL PREVIEW/RALLYE INTERNATIONAL DU VALAIS ERC 2014:

VLARA17A

24 October 2014

The 24-year-old Belgian is a lady of many talents: co-driver, university graduate, speaker of five languages and now a stage-end reporter for ERC Rally Radio and Eurosport Events. She spoke to Fiaerc.com ahead of her latest challenge.
A change of jobs for Rallye du Valais. How did the opportunity come about?
“Firstly I’m very happy that Gilbert Roy, Director of Editorial, Eurosport Events, has given me the opportunity to cover for Julian Porter during Rallye International du Valais.I suppose I would have never come up with such an idea myself, because I’ve never asked myself the question if I wanted to do something for television or radio. But the more I thought about the offer, the more I really thought it could be a job that really suits me.”

But the more I thought about the offer, the more I really thought it could be a job that really suits me.”

Did you ever imagine you’d swap jobs on a rally?
“When I started rallying in 2008 I must say I was a very shy and insecure young girl who preferred hiding from the media. In the meantime this has changed a lot. I feel much more confident with myself, with my work as a co-driver and I have learned to express myself fluently in several languages.”

What can you bring to this role?
“I know a lot of the drivers I’ll have to interview. I’m looking forward to it. It will probably be a little weird. But who knows, this could also mean a small advantage. Maybe some drivers will talk from their hearts, and use less rehearsed phrases. Of course I can empathise with the drivers and co-drivers in any situation. I know exactly how they feel when they do an amazing special stage. Or when they get a setback. No doubt I will be a mother hen looking after her brood. I suppose I will not be a standard presenter. But I know of course that I should come with clear and accurate information. I will do my job with enthusiasm and to the best of my capacities.”
