Tactics and tyre care – Sweden opens with steady Shakedown

Rally Schweden, Motorsport, WRC, 05.02.2014

6 February 2014

Cruising rather than full throttle at the Rally Sweden – the Shakedown at the second round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) was all about saving the tyres. Unusually warm weather for Sweden – the temperature at the Service Park in Hagfors is currently hovering around freezing point – transformed the Shakedown in Råda into a damp route. The gravel is already starting to peek through here and there. With this in mind, all the WRC drivers took a leisurely approach in order to look after the tungsten spikes on their tyres. Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) in the number 2 Polo R WRC ended “free practice” in second place. World Champions Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia in the #1 World Rally Car from Wolfsburg were twelfth fastest. Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko Markkula (N/FIN) were particularly cautious ahead of their “home rally”, coming home in 28th place.

The Prime Minister and the Prince – dignitaries on display at the rally start in Karlstad

Sweden’s Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and Prince Carl Philip of Sweden are set to grace the start of the Rally Sweden on Wednesday evening. The politician and the prince will check out the World Rally Cars on the opening special stage at the horse racing track in Karlstad. Carl Philip of Sweden is no stranger to the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Last year, he drove the Rally Sweden stages in a Porsche 911 ahead of the historic rally cars.

No. 1 fan – Volkswagen Board Member Dr. Neußer makes flying visit to Sweden

The Volkswagen Motorsport works team will receive support from on high on the final day of the Rally Sweden. Volkswagen Board Member for Technical Development, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer, will have his fingers crossed for his charges at the Service Park in Hagfors on Saturday. He will also visit the classic “Vargåsen” stage, which features the famous “Colin’s Crest” jump. As the Board Member for Technical Development, Dr. Neußer’s department is also responsible for Volkswagen’s outings in the World Rally Championship.
