Celebratory season finale in Hannover

WRC - Saison 2013 Championship Cerenomy

25 November

FIA World Rally Championship (WRC)

Five days after the successful sporting finale to the Rally Great Britain, Volkswagen also embarked on a celebratory end to the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Around 500 guests were invited to a party in Hannover. Among those taking part in the celebrations were Volkswagen board members Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer and Dr. Arno Antlitz, as well as the spiritual father of Volkswagen route to the World Championship titles* and current Audi board member Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg. In the “Peppermint Pavilion” in Hannover they experienced a World Championship night in the company of sponsors, partners and suppliers. One of the highlights of the evening was a film looking back at the WRC year, which summarized the surprising yet outstanding season Volkswagen has experienced. During an entertaining round entitled “Rally Dally”, the three driver/co-driver pairs of Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F), Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) and Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko Markkula (N/FIN), as well as rally legends Carlos Sainz/Luis Moya (E/E) put their rally knowledge, skill and sportsmanship to the test.

Slot car 24-hour race
Mini Polo R WRC in second place at the maxi marathon

First race and a first podium finish – the mini-format Polo R WRC completed its first race in second place. Just like its older brother did in its first WRC outing in Monte Carlo in January. At a 24-hour race for slot cars in Hamburg, the team with an all-star lineup managed a successful debut for the one-of-a-kind, 1:24 scale prototype built for the race in collaboration with Volkswagen Motorsport. At the controls were the creator and TV producer Daniel Bäumler, DTM Champion Mike Rockenfeller, as well as the technical director of the Phoenix racing team, Jürgen Jungklaus. The 24-hour race was held on a digital high-tech slot car circuit. Volkswagen Motorsport went head-to-head with teams from Audi, Bentley, BMW, McLaren and Porsche. The win went to Audi Sport, who were represented by a model of the R8.

Just 52 days to go till the “Monte” – bulging appointment diary for the test team

Not long now before Volkswagen begin their title defence in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). In 52 days’ time the engines of the World Rally Cars, including the three refined Polo R WRC cars, will once again be fired up during competition. However, a few tests for the World Champion* car lie ahead before then – test drives on asphalt, ice and snow in Monte Carlo and Sweden. The tests in Monte Carlo will start on 02 December and the test drives in Sweden on 16 December.

* Subject to the official publication of the results by the FIA.
