Enthusiastic reception: Ogier and Ingrassia at home among the fans in Gap

11 November

FIA World Rally Championship (WRC)

Thousands of fans came out to welcome the world rally champions* Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia (F/F) in the French town of Gap, Ogier’s home town. The champion Ogier started by performing a few show laps in his Polo R WRC in the local ice hockey arena, the Alp’Arena, cheered on by 3,000 fans. A film featuring highlights of the season was also shown, after which Ogier was congratulated on his huge triumph by many of his companions and friends. Ogier and Ingrassia, who hails from Aix-en-Provence, then took their Volkswagen out onto Rue Carnot, the main street in Gap, where the world champions* were only able to make slow progress due to the thousands of onlookers there. The day was brought to a close in a hall in Gap in the evening, where Ogier also gave interviews to the many journalists who had made the trip there.

Sports weekend: Jari-Matti Latvala in Wolfsburg

First of all, Jari-Matti Latvala presented the Polo R WRC before the start of the football match between VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund, and was well received by the fans there. Then he headed to the ice hockey in the adjacent rink, where he manoeuvred his Polo R WRC in a wild drift on the ice, before picking up an ice hockey stick himself. Latvala had an exciting few hours in Wolfsburg and proved to be something of a lucky charm on his very first time at a major football match, as VfL Wolfsburg pulled a big surprise out of the hat by beating the Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund 2–1. After the match, Latvala drove VfL Wolfsburg’s managing director Klaus Allofs to the nearby ice hockey stadium to attend a charity event called ‘Wolfsburger für Wolfsburg’, which was also attended by Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen. And Latvala didn’t just put on an impressive show on the ice while behind the wheel of his rally car – he also did well on the ice as an ice hockey player, alongside the professional German Ice Hockey League (DEL) players of the team Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg and also the former national goalie in football, Hans Jörg Butt. While the Finn Latvala failed to score a goal, he did nonetheless make quite an impression with the Wolfsburg professional players.

The world champions* Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F), Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) and Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko Markkula (N/FIN) hit the gravel tracks to work on the set-ups of their 315 hp World Rally Cars ‘made in Wolfsburg’. “We are very well prepared and are highly motivated too,” commented Ogier.
